Renovation and caring for coats
Wood renovation and care with SIGMA COATINGS products
If we wish to keep for long time the natural beauty of wood, we need to protect it from the operation of harmful external agents, through optimally selected and professionally applied paint coats.
In result of changes of humidity or temperature, wooden elements change their original parameters (swelling or shrinking). Therefore, paints and varnishes, which protect woodwork, have to meet stringent requirements, of which the most important are:
- high flexibility
- high steam-permeability
Industrial paints for wooden windows and doors are an effective barrier protecting against adverse weather factors, at the same time enabling active respiration of wood.
Wood in a window tends to achieve the state of hygroscopic balance; it takes moisture from the air inside and transports it outside, regardless of the layer of paint, which protects window frame from both sides.
The ability to conduct moisture gives you three benefits:
- no humidity is captured in wood
- the climate in the room is better
- wood does not dry out and retains its flexibility

This is why in woodwork painting we use only ecological systems of acrylic water-diluted paints.
Industrial products for woodwork paining are applied in thick layers. Moreover, they contain special filters and pigments based on ferrous oxides, absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation. Despite these protections, due to weather factors (wind, rain, sun, hail, snow) the paint coat is continually subject to decomposition process, which decreases its nominal thickness.
EFFECTIVE CARE
Consistent maintenance can considerably lengthen the periods between renovation works. The use of milk for nourishment of paint coats Sigma Holzpflegemilch (twice a year) is recommended. When you apply this material to external surface of wood frames, you obtain the effect of "shoe polish".
After drying up, the thin coat of waxes remains on the surface of paint coat and serves as an additional barrier, which slows down the decomposition process. Moreover, the applied milk layer can "close" microcracks in the paint coat, thus considerably reducing the migration of moisture inside the window frames. Using regularly Sigma Holzpflegemilch maintenance milk, you are able to keep your windows in the condition not requiring painting with renovation paints even for the period of 6 to 8 years.
RENOVATION PAINTING
Unfortunately, every painting coat is destroyer under weather conditions. The harsher these conditions are (excessive sun exposure, frequent precipitation and strong wind), the faster the paint erosion processes take place.
The aim of renovation painting is restoring the nominal thickness of paint, degraded with time. Renovation painting has to be performed before the paint protecting the windows cracks and loses its tightness and water starts penetrating wood, causing blue stain, growth of rot fungi or other not easily reversible changes. If renovation painting is performed at proper time, when paint on windows is not yet cracked and does not flake off, this treatment is very simple, not time consuming and can be treated as weekend repose of the owner of the house.
HOW TO PERFORM RENOVATION PAINTING
Leaves and frames from exterior side should be ground with sandpaper of 200-240 granulation.
Sanded elements should be thoroughly vacuumed and wiped with slightly damp cloth.
After drying up, apply 2 coats of Sigmalife DS Acryl renovation varnish in the colour of your choice (stain coats), or Sigmatorno Satin (opaque coats).
Renovation paining should be preferably carried out on a spring sunny day.
